Welcome to the Power Users community on Codidact!

Power Users is a Q&A site for questions about the usage of computer software and hardware. We are still a small site and would like to grow, so please consider joining our community. We are looking forward to your questions and answers; they are the building blocks of a repository of knowledge we are building together.

Software Recommendations Category
On [the original proposal for Power User](https://meta.codidact.com/posts/278833), there was talk about allowing software recommendations on the site. Now that the site is up and running, I'd like to bring that request over to this Meta.

Could we have a "Software Recommendations" category, similar to other communities such as [Outdoors'](https://outdoors.codidact.com/categories/28) or [Photography's Gear Recommendations](https://photography.codidact.com/categories/24)?

## Draft Guidelines

See also: *[How to ask a great question](https://powerusers.codidact.com/help/how-to-ask)*

 - A request should have objective criteria that can be used to judge whether an answer is applicable.

   - Good: *[What program can automatically footnote different number of footnotes per line?](https://powerusers.codidact.com/posts/281755)*

The poster has noted the shortcomings of the program (Word) they are using and is requesting a *specific feature* they need. Answers can be objectively judged by this criteria; they either can or cannot do what the asker wants.

   - Bad: *What is the best browser?*

 - Should be able to go without saying, but a request should be within the scope of Power Users[^1].

   - Rule of thumb: If the type of software is on-topic in Q&A, it is on-topic to request.

 - Posters should avoid radically changing or adding restrictions to their request. (Do not invalidate existing answers.)

 - Posters should show what programs they've already tried, and what they found lacking in them.

[^1]: Whatever the scope is decided to be.
