How can I work around or "life hack" Word's failure to 2-column footnotes?

[. . .] Your only option is to file a bug-report to Microsoft using the Feedback Hub, then wait for a fix. Please recommend some workaround, subject to these postulates. 1. The academic publication requires 1 column text. I can't 2-column the text. 2. I can't access or downgrade to Word 2013 to 2016. 3. I have over 900 footnotes that are too unproductive to update manually. Footnotes must be updated automatically.
