Stack contents of layer or selection

If I have a layer or selection, how do I stack it horizontally and/or vertically such that it draws into the layer beneath (or current layer in the case of a selection)?

I have a tile that I'd like to stack X number of times horizontally and Y number of times vertically such that the end result is a table of tiles.

Use Filters/Map/Tile (menu bar).

The new width equals the old width multiplied by the number of times you want the item horizontally stacked. Similarly, multiply the height for the vertical stack.

Make sure New image is selected, and choose OK.

Copy the new image, navigate back to the previous image, and paste it in. Delete the old single-tile layer if need be, as well as the newly opened image view.

Merge the newly added layer with the layer you want to draw the tiles into.
