How can I remove sticky "reply" etc buttons in Gmail Android app?

The Android Gmail app recently (I have version 2025.06.15.773123224.Release) added sticky reply buttons (reply, reply all, forward) to the bottom of the screen when viewing an individual message. This block of buttons takes up almost 20% of the real estate on my phone. How do I get rid of it?

Settings -> General Settings includes a pre-existing option "Hide bottom navigation on scroll", which is already checked. I tried toggling that off and on and restarting the app, but that didn't make a difference. That seems to be for something else. Also, while it should be unrelated, I've already set "Conversation list density" to "compact".
