Welcome to the Power Users community on Codidact!

Power Users is a Q&A site for questions about the usage of computer software and hardware. We are still a small site and would like to grow, so please consider joining our community. We are looking forward to your questions and answers; they are the building blocks of a repository of knowledge we are building together.

Software Recommendations Category

On the original proposal for Power User, there was talk about allowing software recommendations on the site. Now that the site is up and running, I'd like to bring that request over to this Meta.

Could we have a "Software Recommendations" category, similar to other communities such as Outdoors' or Photography's Gear Recommendations?

Draft Guidelines

See also: How to ask a great question

  • A request should have objective criteria that can be used to judge whether an answer is applicable.

  • Should be able to go without saying, but a request should be within the scope of Power Users[1].

    • Rule of thumb: If the type of software is on-topic in Q&A, it is on-topic to request.
  • Posters should avoid radically changing or adding restrictions to their request. (Do not invalidate existing answers.)

  • Posters should show what programs they've already tried, and what they found lacking in them.

  1. Whatever the scope is decided to be. ↩︎

This(Software Category) is a good idea. In this question @Lundin is requesting for a new category where following topics are included :

  • MS Office
  • a subset of Google's G Suite that includes Docs, Sheets, etc
  • Libre office and open office
  • WPS office
  • Zoho office, etc.

In my answer I said :

Is it wise to create new categories or sites for every 100 software?

In this question you are requesting to create a new category for Software. In this comment @Lundin said

The main reason is that if the main category contains some 95% office suite questions, then people will hesitate to ask other types of questions here.

That's why I will say Software Category is a great idea

Actually, there's some reason of requesting software category. Some users in Unix SE and Superuser just like to answer "OS" related question. And, I believe some users in this site want to answer "OS" related question also. But, currently most of people are asking software related question. That's why I think if there was another software category than it will be helpful for users to answers/reviewing question.

I have no idea why you bring up that post here. It has absolute nothing to do with software recommendations. A software recommendation would be "which office suite has the best word handling program?" but an office suite question would be "how do I turn on bold text in MS Word 2099?". There's simply no relation and just because we can have one category it doesn't mean we can't have others.

@Lundin Having lot of categories for different software isn't good idea.

Yes that's your opinion which you voiced in that other thread. What does this have to do with a software recommendations category?

Isn't the question requesting for a new category where Softwares are included? Did I understand the question wrong?
