A: My hard drive is screeching, now what? In case of a classic magnetic disc drive starts to make new strange sounds and you can tell it isn't coming from one of the many fans in the computer, turn it off immediately and remove the power plug. Assuming a tower chassis PC, you can safely open up the chassis and listen - there will be a fa... (more) |

A: Are non power users questions welcome in Power Users? I think the knowledge requirement is roughly: - The poster should have some experience working with the technology the question is about. - The poster should have some experience working computers in general. Which is probably a prerequisite to finding/using Codidact in the first place. If th... (more) |

A: Ought I clone my C Windows drive, from my old SSD to new SSD in new computer? Over time, the Windows folder keeps gathering crap and grow. Therefore, a fresh installation of Windows is bliss - it is the only 100% working way to get rid of all waste files that it picks up over the years. This is one of the reasons why it is recommended to install Windows on a HD of its own and ... (more) |

How to get rid of the ugly search icon rolled out in today's Windows 10/11 update? Just updated Windows (2022-06-17, version Windows 10 Pro 21H2) and now there's an eye-catching, ugly icon in the taskbar, which graphics suggests that Windows' intended target audience is children and/or designers of congratulations cards: Image alt text Hoovering with the mouse suggests that "... A: Should I now delete backup files already stored on my SSD C Drive? Should I use free space on SSD C Drive? Generally, PC these days are almost always built with 2 hard drives: one for the OS and related programs, one for applications and user data. There is nothing directly harmful with storing a lot of user data on the C:\ drive, obviously it can be used to store files just fine. But what will happ... (more) |

I had pretty much the same problems as the OP describes on my previous PC. Some aspect of what graphic programs you had running caused a certain part of the GFX card to go live, which in turn caused coil whine inside the PSU. And this _was_ a Corsair gaming PSU, after which I wouldn't recommend that ... (more) |

Since the people reading this are likely complete laymen to electronics, you should probably add the following: 1) Do not poke at the large capacitors inside the PSU with your fingers! This is dangerous even though the power has been removed. 2) In case you aim to poke at components on a circuit boar... (more) |

@#36377 The overlap with Linux is obvious, but there doesn't need to be one with Software Development. Basically all questions about _using_ version control tools could be posted on Software Development and all questions about installing, troubleshooting servers etc could be posted here. (more) |

There's already plenty of version control questions on Software Development, where this would be perfectly on-topic. I think questions like this are more suited for that site. Or maybe we have a scope overlap between the sites? (more) |

@#36363 If it's a brand new game (or well re-make in this case), then Nvidia might have released optimizations for that particular game. But usually such optimizations are rather minor. Also if it's a new game it could simply be poorly optimized, and if you are lucky future patches will increase perf... (more) |

Why exactly do you think it's your computer/gfx card? Will the game launch? Is the screen lagging or showing weird graphics? If it's just lag then if you are lucky there's one particular setting you can tweak that makes a big difference. If it won't launch at all, then the problem could be anything. ... (more) |

A: How would you feel about a merger with Linux Systems? Since Power Users is essentially a super set of the Linux site, if a merger is to happen, it becomes natural to merge Linux into this site. I don't think anyone at Power Users would mind, nix questions are already on-topic here. So it ought to be more important to let the Linux community decide if th... (more) |

If this is a classical HD based on magnetic discs and a reader head and this is a _new noise_ you haven't heard before, then I'd say it's about to break. If it always sounded like this, it's unlikely a problem. If it's a modern flash-based HD it shouldn't be making any sounds at all. (more) |

A: What is the formal terminology to describe the hierarchy from a screen to a window? There exists to my knowledge no formal terminology. I have no idea where you got those terms from or why you think they are correct. Also, the answer likely depends on whom you ask: an electronics designer making screens, the OS designers, the application programmers, the front end GUI designer or th... (more) |

Why is Firefox performing so poorly on my Android? Firefox is my preferred browser when using a PC. I've also always found it to be one of the faster no matter computer. A: For the HP LaserJet Pro MFP M426fdn printer, is ProRes 1200 higher quality than FastRes 1200? "ProRes" and "FastRes" are HP terms and not general terms. Nobody but HP knows what's involved in one or the other. Print quality is a very subjective area - things like paper quality and cleaning matter a lot. Some printing methods are more suitable for certain paper types than others. LPI stands... (more) |

A: How do I start diagnosing why a Windows Server turns itself off? I don't know much about the server versions, but for Windows in general, you'll want to peek in the Event Viewer. "How can I plug my in-line stand-alone mic, into my Lenovo IdeaPad without audio jacks?" You can't do that. Period. The sane solution here is to buy a headset. That's what's supposed to go into the port on your picture - hence the picture of a headset next to it. You can get cheap ones for nothing. A... (more) |

You can tell it to prompt for it and set a time or schedule when the update will happen. But I don't think it is possible to stop the update train. Also if you aren't around to tell it when you want it to do an update, it will eventually do the update anyway. The only solution I know of is to switch ... (more) |
