Welcome to the Power Users community on Codidact!

Power Users is a Q&A site for questions about the usage of computer software and hardware. We are still a small site and would like to grow, so please consider joining our community. We are looking forward to your questions and answers; they are the building blocks of a repository of knowledge we are building together.

Comment Post #291141 Might want to clarify this. Because if the SSD is making noises, that's peculiar.

Comment Post #286242 I had pretty much the same problems as the OP describes on my previous PC. Some aspect of what graphic programs you had running caused a certain part of the GFX card to go live, which in turn caused coil whine inside the PSU. And this _was_ a Corsair gaming PSU, after which I wouldn't recommend that ...

Comment Post #286214 Since the people reading this are likely complete laymen to electronics, you should probably add the following: 1) Do not poke at the large capacitors inside the PSU with your fingers! This is dangerous even though the power has been removed. 2) In case you aim to poke at components on a circuit boar...

Comment Post #285834 @#36377 The overlap with Linux is obvious, but there doesn't need to be one with Software Development. Basically all questions about _using_ version control tools could be posted on Software Development and all questions about installing, troubleshooting servers etc could be posted here.

Comment Post #285834 There's already plenty of version control questions on Software Development, where this would be perfectly on-topic. I think questions like this are more suited for that site. Or maybe we have a scope overlap between the sites?

Comment Post #285726 The issue here is that if you violate licensing of other sites by posting copyright material here without attribution, the post is strictly speaking illegal and Codidact is the responsible publisher. It seems that the moderator was needlessly tolerant with this waiting a whole day, such posts should ...

Comment Post #285265 @#36363 If it's a brand new game (or well re-make in this case), then Nvidia might have released optimizations for that particular game. But usually such optimizations are rather minor. Also if it's a new game it could simply be poorly optimized, and if you are lucky future patches will increase perf...

Comment Post #285265 Why exactly do you think it's your computer/gfx card? Will the game launch? Is the screen lagging or showing weird graphics? If it's just lag then if you are lucky there's one particular setting you can tweak that makes a big difference. If it won't launch at all, then the problem could be anything. ...

Comment Post #284938 If this is a classical HD based on magnetic discs and a reader head and this is a _new noise_ you haven't heard before, then I'd say it's about to break. If it always sounded like this, it's unlikely a problem. If it's a modern flash-based HD it shouldn't be making any sounds at all.

Comment Post #284384 So basically it can't be used. Well, yikes. I'm hesitant to use products by Google for anything sensitive like bank access. I did use Opera on PC back in the days, it was super fast and super buggy. Stopped using it because I could't trust it not to explode during money transactions etc. Admittedly t...

Comment Post #283153 Some months back I helped my mom to update her ~7 years old Samsung to latest Android version. Worked just fine. So I'm guessing it's manufacturer-specific - you can update for as long as the manufacturer is still providing support to the phone model.

Comment Post #282961 "How can I plug my in-line stand-alone mic, into my Lenovo IdeaPad without audio jacks?" You can't do that. Period. The sane solution here is to buy a headset. That's what's supposed to go into the port on your picture - hence the picture of a headset next to it. You can get cheap ones for nothing. A...

Comment Post #282278 "A lot of questions were asked (and closed) on Software Dev before this community existed." Not many of them were closed. A lot of them are borderline on-topic and there was no better place for them. I think it is most fair to have those questions migrated here - the majority of them were self-answe...

Comment Post #281905 I agree that HTML questions should be posted on software.codidact, not sure about Latex. Something can be on-topic on several sites at once.

Comment Post #282122 You can tell it to prompt for it and set a time or schedule when the update will happen. But I don't think it is possible to stop the update train. Also if you aren't around to tell it when you want it to do an update, it will eventually do the update anyway. The only solution I know of is to switch ...

Comment Post #281940 The real question is how Microsoft knows where your computer is located so that they can give you weather reports... Anyone remember telling Microsoft that information? Comment Post #281813 @JohnDoea A lot of the rules on SE actually originate out of common sense. If you were to ask me such a question and I have domain knowledge because I work at a company making such products, I'll very likely be gagged by a NDA with my employer. So it will only lead to broad and vague answers - overal...

Comment Post #281813 Apart from that I really don't think the question belongs on Power Users either. Software Development does supposedly allow program design questions, but when we proposed that to be on-topic, then at least I thought the scope would be limited to design questions about the program that someone is deve...

Comment Post #281813 @JohnDoea‭ How is questions asking for speculation on overly broad topics any better than those asking for speculation of specific things though? That just means there's multiple problems: too broad, asking for opinions, possibly cannot be answered at all, and so on. It essentially boils down to: can...

Comment Post #281812 Yes that's your opinion which you voiced in that other thread. What does this have to do with a software recommendations category?

Comment Post #281812 I have no idea why you bring up that post here. It has absolute nothing to do with software recommendations. A software recommendation would be "which office suite has the best word handling program?" but an office suite question would be "how do I turn on bold text in MS Word 2099?". There's simply ...

Comment Post #281811 The main reason is that if the main category contains some 95% office suite questions, then people will hesitate to ask other types of questions here. I certainly would. Currently, in this very early stage, 10 out of 26 questions (38%) are about office suites. If we migrate the 50+ excel formula ques...

Comment Post #281788 It's very hard to tell what could be the cause. Windows update silently replacing working drivers with broken drivers is one of the most common computer problems nowadays. Comment Post #281716 It's better but I don't like the idea as whole. It's an open invitation to subjective, bad questions no matter how well you phrase the rules.

Comment Post #281716 If this is to be included, it needs some very clear directions of how to post such questions. A use case, some specific requirements etc. Otherwise it risks ending up with "hey anyone know any good games?", "what web browser is best?" and similar low quality question. Also, the gear recommendation ca...
